Cultural Default And Translation Compensation From The Perspective Of Skopstheorie

Many cultural issues have been brought into research scope of translation with the coming of cultural turn. Cultural default and its compensation are two of those issues selected by the present writer to make further study. Cultural default refers to absence of relevant knowledge shared by the author and his intended readers. On the one hand, cultural default makes language concise and therefore communication efficiency is improved; On the other hand, cultural default stimulates readers'imagination and makes readers take part in active reading. However, in translation, cultural default brings great challenge for translators because of the fact that source and target readers do not share the same cultural background. The author of the thesis tries to explore cultural default and its compensation from the perspective of Skopstheorie.The whole thesis is divided into six parts. Chapter one is introductory part, which gives research background, necessity of the research, research objective and layout of the thesis. Chapter two reviews Skopstheorie-theoretical framework of the thesis. Background, basic rules, advantages of Skopstheorie as well as controversy caused by Skopstheorie are reviewed. Chapter three analyzes cultural default, which includes definition, values and classification of cultural default. Besides cultural default, translation compensation is reviewed in this chapter.Chapter four and chapter five are the most important parts of the thesis. Chapter four applies Skopstheorie into translation of cultural default. The writer of the thesis tries to explore that three basic rules of Skopstheorie are feasible for dealing with cultural default. Compensating methods of cultural default are analyzed from the perspective of Skopstheorie. From the purpose of cultural communication, adding notes in/outside text are the most appropriate methods. Chapter five applies theory into practice. Shapiro's Outlaws of the Marsh is analyzed from the angle of Skopstheorie. Shapiro's translation Skops of Outlaws of the Marsh is first explored. Then Shapiro's dealing with cultural default of Outlaws of the Marsh is analyzed based on Shapiro's translation Skops. Chapter six is conclusion part. This part concludes that Skopstheorie is feasible to deal with cultural default. However, cultural default needs further study due to its complication.
