Taking understanding and explanation as the connection between hermeneutics and translation,George Steiner channeled hermeneutics into translation studies. On the basis of this,he put forward hermeneutic translation motion theory—trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation, bringing about more freedom for maneuver for the examination of the openness, plurality and dynamicity of the text and the subjectivity of the translator, and breaking new ground for the investigation into translation studies.Steiner expounded the psychological and practical process of translation philosophically and theoretically, but did not touch on how to concretely carry out the motion to create excellent translation. Some scholars have made fruitful researches by applying the theory to the studies on different translations.Through applying the theory to the studies on Shapiro's translation of Outlaws of the Marsh, the thesis aims to construct a practical and effective model of the motion to guide translation practice. With double cultural identity,Shapiro devoted himself to Chinese literary translation for five decades. With loyal and complete content, concise style, fluent writing and beautiful language in line with the original novel, his translated version of Outlaws of the Marsh, the mark of the summit of his translation career, enjoys great prestige at home and abroad.Shapiro's translation thought is exhaustively contained in it.By applying the theory to the studies on the translation,it can be found how he conducts the four stages to translate properly and effectively.Through the case study the thesis reaches the conclusion: at the stage of trust, the translator trusts and loves the original work and takes presenting it to the world by translating as a sacred mission. The translator's unintellectual factors play an important part in the translation. At the stage of aggression, the translator,as the reader of the original, comprehensively and deeply understands the original on the stylistic, semantic and pragmatic levels. On the stylistic level, the style of the characters' conversation and the author's description should be well understood;on the semantic and pragmatic levels, the relevant knowledge of Chinese and Chinese culture and the context of the original should be intimately understood. At the stage of incorporation, the translator,as the writer of the translation, completely and exactlyincorporates the style and content of the original on the three levels, creating the translation in line with English language and culture. In view of the understandability and acceptability of the translation, the same information as the original, less or more information than the original can be incorporated. At the stage of compensation, the translator,as the mediator between the original and the translation, contrasts the relevant knowledge about the two languages and cultures to compensate for the loss of information on the three levels.
