In American political life the presidential inaugural addresses, which are written by the most excellent writers in advance, are an inseparable part. Therefore, they possess both the characteristics of spoken and written form. What's more, the inaugural addresses are not targeted to any special group of people. They are a real shadow of the American politics and daily life. In recent years, more and more attention has been being gained in Sino-American relationship. With our people being interested in American politics, economy, culture and other aspects, the research relating to the American presidential inaugural addresses is of great importance to cross-cultural communication and translation practice.Kennedy's and Nixon's and Reagan's first inaugural addresses are the access of this paper. The author tries researching from language perspective and cultural perspective respectively, finding out an acceptable translation strategy.This paper consists of six chapters. Chapter one gives a brief introduction in terms of topic source, research purpose and significance. Chapter two states the stylistic characteristics of the American inaugural addresses. Chapter three analyses Kennedy's and Nixon's and Reagan's first inaugural addresses respectively, finding some problems existing in the translation. Chapter four and five, which are the key parts of the whole paper, do the research from two different perspectives: language and culture. Chapter six is the conclusion.What's more, this paper is a guide for those who are devoted in translating the American inaugural addresses and other non-literal forms. And it also helpful for those who would like to improve the ability to make speeches, write and communicate.
