Political speeches are delivered by addressers to elucidate their positions, viewpoints andpolicies considering the political situation home and abroad. There are a lots of appraisalresources in political speeches.The U.S. Presidential Inaugural Addresses as an importantform of political speeches are the objects of the study. On the basis of the clarification of theappraisal choices of The U.S. Presidential Inaugural Addresses discourse between Appraisaland Adaptation and on the basis of expounding the essentials for analyzing The U.S.Presidential Inaugural Addresses discourse, the theoretical framework for analyzing The U.S.Presidential Inaugural Addresses discourse is worked out by situating Appraisal system inAdaptation theory which can provide explanative basis for appraisal choices. A close checkand verification of the cases of the appraisal choice making in our data on the basis of theanalysis and discussion of The U.S. Presidential Inaugural Addresses discourse in productionand interpretation demonstrates that appraisal choices make adaptations to various objects ofcontext, including variables of Mental World and variables of Social World. Speakers makeadaptations to psychological motivations and emotions in Mental World. Speakers makeadaptations to social norms and conventions, culture and politics in Social World. As a newperspective for political speeches study, its practical significance is not only providing atheoretical basis for the subsequent study of the discourse, but also providing the practicalguidance. So it has a great academic value.
