It has been discussed for a long time that how to provide foreign language learners a good foreign language learning environment. With the application of computer, multimedia, Internet and other modern information technology on foreign language teaching, to some extent, the problem of lack of foreign language learning environment has eased. However, it should be noted that language learning environment in China is still not ideal. Compared with the second language learners, students in China rarely use foreign language outside classroom, which largely limits the development of their comprehensive language capabilities. With the development of modern information technology at the beginning of this century, experts at home and abroad have begun to study the significance and prospects of application of virtual environment in foreign language teaching, and designed a number of language learning systems based on virtual environments, such as the "Virtual reality language Learning Network"of UK, " Russian three-dimensional multi-user virtual world, "of Russia and so on. Studies show that it is possible to simulate the target language environment in Internet with VE technology, which can immerse foreign language learners who are far from the target language countries in a similar-to-authentic language environment to acquire foreign language. The application of virtual environment technology in foreign language teaching is an extension and development of computer-assisted language learning , which can be called a virtual environment assisted language learning (V-CALL).This paper describes the concept of V-CALL, history, core technology and related research at home and abroad, and has laid a theoretical foundation for the application of the virtual environment in foreign language learning from the constructivist learning theory, communication theory and the theory of second language acquisition. In the specific application part, this paper describes"The Russian three-dimensional multi-user virtual world", which was studied by the Russian University of St. Petersburg ? R & D. In view of existing situation of current Russian education in China, this paper has designed the Russian learning model based on the "Russian three-dimensional multi-user virtual world," and then discussed the impact of this mode on foreign language teaching. The paper argued that, the superior technical performance of V-CALL has a very important theoretical and practical significance for improving teachers'dominance of foreign language teaching in classroom and formating the teaching model " emphasize both form and function, and complement learning and acquisition " in foreign language learning.
