Professor Hu Gengshen posed Approach to translation as adaptation and selection in 2004 basing on the common opinion of"adaptation"and"selection"in translation circle, and on the background of translation turn. It defined translation from the perspective of the translator and provides a novel framework for the translator's adaptation and selection in the process of translating. Both Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are very famous and important in the Chinese literary history. They lived in similar social times, but in the end they took different roads. Lu Xun's translation motive was to save his country and people and awaken Chinese wisdom, While Lin Yutang chose to introduce Chinese classical works to westerners and made them understand more Chinese culture. Having different translation motives, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang also made different selections on the source texts, translation strategies and methods. With the enlightenments of the theory of translation as adaptation and selection, this thesis contrasts Lu Xun's and Lin Yutang's translation thoughts and explores how and what they select to adapt to translational eco-environment from the macro social background they lived in,integrating with other translational eco-environment, such as their translation motives, target readers'needs and conditions and so on, but not from pure linguistic level. They both make great contributions to Chinese translation history. In the process of translating they subconsciously made adaptive selection, their selection adapted to the translational eco-environment, and their works survived in the environment.
