The characteristic of multicolorful timbre in Chinese folk music ensemble has been a unique aesthetic idealization since ancient times. However, this idealization is changing and transferring to a symphonic direction. To improve this trend, this thesis, from the perspective of the modern folk music ensemble's'westernization', analyzes the'Chinese music craze'phenomenon in western world; explore the essence of Chinese folk music---harmony and timbre color; and proposes another different developing direction of Chinese folk music---a color-oriented road.In order to fulfill the research purpose, the study discusses the multicolor characteristic of traditional Chinese folk music from the musical acoustics and ethnomusicology perspectives. Firstly, timbre is classified into two groups: inward timbre and folk timbre. Further classification, detailed analysis and generalization are done on the Chinese folk timbre according to the styles of musical instrument, musical ensemble and musical mode,in order to obtain the performance features and modes of folk music. Furthermore,a comparison-based approach is to be done between western and Chinese folk music to find the reason of the loss of multicolorful timbre in modern folk music,as well as the misunderstanding and importance of the development of mulicolorful timbre. Finally, reasonable development ideas and feasible development strategies are put forward to opening up a new multicolorful path of Chinese folk music ensemble.
