Errentai's instrumental ensemble music is a general definition of ensemble music performed by Errentai bands, which is the most important part of Errentai music with relative individuality. Errentai's instrumental ensemble music, largely popular among the western Inner Mongolia, is a traditional ensemble of stringed and woodwind music. Its band is mainly composed of Mei (a kind of flute), Sihu (a four-stringed bowed instrument), dulcimer and Sikuaiwa (4 bamboo clappers). Generally speaking, Errentai's instrumental ensemble not only embodies"smallness, gentleness, delicacy and elegance", the general characters of the traditional Chinese stringed and woodwind music, but also has its own local-colored individuality as well. Furthermore, with the addition of Sihu, a local ethnic instrument, Errentai's instrumental ensemble music expresses the distinctive regional color. In June, 2006, Errentai was listed by the State Council in China as one of the earliest national non-material cultural heritages to be protected. On this ground, the cultural heritage needs to be protected, studied, imparted and inherited. The purpose of Errentai's instrumental ensemble music is to protect and inherit this kind folk art, offering the basic rules of the theory. For this reason, this thesis is intended to make an analytical study of Errentai's instrumental ensemble music from three aspects: Firstly, in the term of ethno-musicology and culture-anthropology, Errentai's instrumental ensemble music is described in detail clearly according to the different time and the same time. Secondly, the general features and styles of Errentai's ensemble music are explored by means of the related theories and approaches of the instrumental science and melodies; Thirdly, the historic inheritance and development of the Errentai's band and number is elaborated from the cultural perspective.Through the above-mentioned fieldwork and research of the music itself, this thesis is intended to generalize the artistic and aesthetic features of the Errentai's ensemble music, and explore its internal regularities of its development and transformation from the perspective of its natural, social and cultural environments.
