The Study Of Conversational Implicature In Pride And Prejudice

Jane Austen is one of the popular English female novelists in the 19th century. In all her life, she has completed six novels, among which Pride and Prejudice is a famous one. Since its publication, there are numerous studies on it. However there are few studies of Pride and Prejudice from the conversational implicature perspective, let alone the personality analysis on the basis of conversational inplicature. And this thesis will have a try on the personality analysis on the basis of conversational implicature. The dialogue in Pride and Prejudice is an important mean to convey the personality of the characters to the readers. It is also a basic material and method to shape the character's image. So this thesis tries to analyze the conversational implicature in Pride and Prejudice with the application of the cooperative principle and the politeness principle.The relationship between linguistics and literature is very close. We can analyze the characters of the literary language with the tool of linguistics, including the cooperative principle and the politeness principle, which are very important. The author finds that in Pride and Prejudice, there are many conversations that violate the common rules in order to make more than what is said. The means the characters use isthe indirect expression. What is more said is the conversational implicature and these need the listener to analyze. To interpret the conversational implicature, the best way is to utilize the Gricean conversational implicature theory, cooperative theory, and Leech's politeness principle. Under given circumstances the speaker's conversational implicature is fixed, and the speaker hopes that the listener can understand his implied meaning. However, due to the difference of the conversational context and the background the listener may not comprehend the conversational implicature.In order to analyze the personality of the characters in Pride and Prejudice to help readers to understand this famous work Pride and Prejudice more deeply and communicate more appropriately, this thesis will analyze the conversations in Pride and Prejudice with the conversational implicature theory of Grice, cooperative principle and politeness principle. In the analysis process, the rhetoric patterns are also applied.
