A Stylistic Analysis Of Imagism Poetry From The Perspective Of Iconicity

This thesis devotes all itself to stylistic analysis of the Imagism Poetry from theperspective of iconicity. With the aim of combining iconicity and rhetoric to establish theory,by which the stylistic features of Imagism Poetry will be analyzed.This thesis is mainly divided into six chapters; the first one is introduction. The secondchapter is theoretical preparation, exactly speaking, establishing a theory by combiningforegrounding theory and iconicity, the feasibility if the combination is also proved.Foregrounding, as the core concept of stylistics, means the featured or characterized language.Rhetoric is the main way to form foregrounding to show the literariness of poetry. As animportant feature of language, iconicity reflects human's cognition, so it also can mirror orreflect poets'emotions. Iconicity in language can also form featured or deviated language.Rhetoric is very systematic, and iconicity reflects human's cognition, so the combination ofthe two has advantages and feasibility. The most important feature of the Imagism Poetry iscreating classical image, by which the poet expressed emotions.The second chapter is the analysis of Imagism Poetry from imagic iconicity, showingthat the sound and phonology of language can almost reflect the poets'emotion and intention.The third chapter is the analysis the syntactical features from diagrammatical iconicity,namely from proximity iconicity, sequencing iconicity and quantitative iconicity. Iconicity insyntax can mirror the human's cognition, thus, stylistic analysis of the poetic language cangive more profound and penetrating analysis. The fourth chapter is the analysis of metaphorfrom metaphorical iconicity, which is more abstract and profound.The last chapter is conclusion. After the thorough and fresh appreciation, the stylisticfeatures are pointed out and the aesthetic value of Imagism Poetry is appreciated. Thus, it issafe to say that not only does this study prove the feasibility and creativity of the combiningiconicity and stylistics, but also enriches the study fruits of the Imagism Poetry.
