The Study Of Non-Four-Character Idioms Which Included By Idioms Dictionaries

Idiom dictionary is one of widely used reference books in our study and daily life. Turning over the Idiom dictionary, it can be easily found that there are many words containing non-four-character except the four-character idioms. Many of them are familiar to us. The thesis uses the 250words containing more than four-character as corpus which are commonly included in the to give a deep and detailed research.At the very beginning of the thesis the object of study and research scope are presented and the current situation and research significance are later discussed.The non-four-character idioms are divided into different categories according to their numbers, structures, emotional meanings and sources and so on. What's more, in the light of numbers, they can be separated into different numbered types, such as five-character or six-character idioms. On the basis of structure, they can be divided into explicit and implicit non-four-character idioms. On the basis of emotional meaning, they can be divided into approving words and derogatory words and neutral words. According to the sources, they can be divided into truncation and general types.The features of the non-four-character idioms in structure are that there will be phrases and sentences and the compressed sentences. In the aspect of speech sound, they have special rhythm and melody. On the semantic side, seven rhetorical devices can cause significant influence on it I ncluding metaphor,parable,metonymy hyperbole dual and comparison and irony.The non-four-character idioms from the respect of semantics and pragmatics are further discussed. As to the semantic meaning, the thesis concludes the general idea from the basic meaning, emotional meaning and multi-meaning. As to the pragmatic meaning, the sentence function and the rhetorical effect and the using effect are given a detailed summary.The rest of the thesis briefly summaries the general idea. In the end several research orientation are put forward to be continued.The main idea of this thesis is the study characteristics of non-four-character idioms which included by Idioms Dictionaries, so that it can contribute to the study of the idioms.
