| "Huaer"is a beautiful scenery in ancient Northwest Culture. It has become one the most representative phenomenon of folk culture in the northwest area. The academic study of huaer began in 1925 when Yuan Fuli (1893-1987), a huaer researcher and a geologist, published an article entitled"The song of Gansu-huaer"in the Folksongs Weekly (82) of Peking University. In Yuan's article, 30 huaers and 4 minors were collected which is the first time that huaer appeared in front of the world, and it is this article that started the academic study on huaer.The present study is a further research on the researches of the past decade. The focus topics of this period are categorized, thus, the research trends are analyzed, which is helpful for the understanding of the development of huaer. There are ten chapters in this paper, which are devoted to the history, the classification, the content, the libretto, the melody and the singing of huaer, and the huaer festival, the angles of researches on huaer, and the protection and the collection of huaer.
