The Opera "Brother Mawu and Sister Gadou" was composed by Sun Tiemin and its scenario was written by Cui Dongliang in 1980s, which based folk stories and folk narrative poems in Linxia in Gansu Province. It revealed the nature of feudal ethic by the love tragedy between Ma Wu and Ga Dou. The prominent feature of this Opera is the integration of the local folk music material "flowers" and the use of Western ways of opera performance created a national opera with Chinese characteristics, not only inherited the nation's music, but also opened up a new way for the development of folk music. It is an elite of innovative national opera and an outstanding representative work of the history of national opera creation, meanwhile it is of explorative significance for the development of the Chinese National Opera.This article contains four parts discusses the background, constitution of the drama, and music features of the opera. and the author tries to sum up the artistic features and practical significance of the opera "Brother Mawu and Sister Gadou".
