This paper attempts to deal with the counter-education of Carol Kennicott, the main character in Main Street, and its ironic meaning in the novel. The paper is divided into three parts including an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction illustrates the literary value of Main Street and the purpose of writing this thesis. The body of this work discusses the process of the protagonist counter-education and the reasons of her failure. The conclusion regards Main Sfreet as effectively wielding irony as an instrument of revelation and discovery, exposing the truth that lies beneath the surface not only in small-towns in America but also virtually in every person.
