From Dim Passion to Philosophic Meditation n the Flowing Traces of Fengzhi's PoemsAbstractFengzhi is one of the most outstanding poets in modern Chinese literature. Hisearly works won a great deal of praise from the poetry critics by his excel lent dim passion expressed in his poems. Just as what Luxun said, he was "the most outstanding expressive poet in China". His "middle-aged creation"桾he Collection of Sonnets is a wonderful work which connects with the trend of thought of the modern world and has a strong philosophic meaning. The experiences of Fengzhi in his poetry study are a developing progress, rising and dynamic. To study Fengzhi plays an important role in further understanding of the change and development of the modern Chinese poets when they are taking the study of individual. As a poet with extreme high-qual ity consciousness, Fengzhi only left us three poem collections before the foundation of the new Chi'na : The Songs of Yesterday (1927), Traveling North and Others (1929),and The collection of Sonnet (1942). These three col lections of poems showed us the traces of his development in poetry. This paper just tends to reveal the moving course of his changing from "expressiveness" to "philosophy" on the base of a fully understanding and grasp of his works from an angle of time-shifting.The Songs of Yesterday is a text of poems ful I of sentiment, sadness and hesitation. Its "sentimental" aesthetic style and subjective feeling determined his position as an "expressive poet" in modern poetry world. In the text of poems, Fengzhi, with the form of expressive short poems, showed that the individuals realized the lonely and wondering atmosphere of the whole society. They had the need of love and the consideration of love. These poems also showed the poet's philosophic understanding about the I ife consciousness of the human being and the uni verse. The four long narrati ve poems in The Songs of Yesterday are the valuable ones among Chinese modern narrative poems. They imp Iicate the poet's philosophic consideration about Iife, society and the conflicts between psychology and physiology of the individuals, thus, the poems add a lot of philosophic tastes to the whole work. The exper i ences of the I i terature creators conf i ne the degree of the i r understand i ng about the society. The experience of "traveling north" to Harbin made Fengzhi realize the absurdity of the existence of human beings. This modernist reaction leads to his creation of Travel ing North and Others , a text initial ly having the consciousness of modernism. In this collection of poems, Bridge and Hungry Beasts from time to time displayed the influences made by existentialist poetry to the writer. While the long poem Travel ing North is not only a description of the social situation but also a work from which we can see the consciousness of Waste Land of El iot and the self-ref lection spirit of the poet. The poet would even like to spoil his dismal feelings and rescue the wor I d from i ts absurd ex i stence. Till then, Fengzh i had had an initial understand i ng about modernism. His acknowledgement of the existentialist philosophy indicates his future trend in poetry.Fengzhi kept si lent for ten years before he finished The col lection of Sonnet. Duringthese years, he read a lot of works by Gothe and works about existential ist phi losophy. As a result, The collection of Sonnet naturally was poured into existentialist phi losophy and the "disintegration theory" of Gothe. For the convenience of statement, this paper named such philosophic ideas as: the forerunner of death; the undertaking of life; the metaphor of communication; the spreading of disintegration. In his expression of these thoughts, Fengzhi chose his experiences as the carrier, used the writing technique called "carved poems" by Rilke, and forged a number of poetry sculptures for us. The collection of Sonnet is the poetry fruit after he consciously accepted existential ism. In indicates that the color of his style had final ly changed into "philo...
