Lee Sang (1910-1937) is a representative Korean modernist writer wh o takes insight into the psychology of people under the oppression of Jap anese colonists during1930s. Lee Sang’s works not only depict the intelle ctual’s alienation, self-contradiction, meaninglessness of life in depth, but also seek the answers to these afflictions earnestly. This thesis analyzes the consciousness of sex and death in Lee San g’s works to approach the nature of changes of the writer’s consciousnes s from inner point of view. Lee’s works are partly based on his own exper iences, therefore, they show the nature of Lee’s consciousness towards lif e. The consciousness of death, in Lee Sang’s works, is implied as the m ale and female protagonists suffer from the physical disability or mental u neasiness. The consciousness of sex is indicated as the characters have i ndulgent sexual relations with other characters.Analysis of consciousness of sex and death of protagonists from diff erent view points in depth contributes to the deeper and broader understa nding of Lee Sang’s works.
