Emma is one of Jane Austen's master pieces, embodying her principal artistic features. This thesis means to make a tentative study of her characterization and writing techniques employed in the novel in order to show how Jane Austen engraves upon a little piece of ivory only two inches square. By recalling Jane austen's literary life and her literary achievement, especially by analyzing the characterization of the characters, chiefly that of the heroinemma,and the relationship between the authoress and her heroine in both social status and personality, the writer of the thesis shows that how Jane Austen manages to give us such a vivid account of her heroine and her aim to create the most characteristic of her heroines of other novels. Jane Austen's carefully presented scenes, skillfully developed plots, appropriately arranged dialogues and excellent language skills. what is more important. the technique of omniscient narrator, largely ensure her success in creating characters. Jane Austen's artistic achievements will ensure her literary position as a great novelist in the history of English literature. The charm of her art will appeal eternally to generations to come.
