This thesis attempts to establish a spectrUm of thought and thought pattems heldby dtherent language speakers and furthers on to look into their influences ontranslation. As abstract and complicated the issue is, the relationship between thoughtand language has been concemed by linguishcs, psychologistS, anthrOpologists andphilosoPhers since a long time ago. From the lingUishc and cultUral pOint of view. this thesisbegins with the discussion on the "Whorf HyPothesis" and pointS out that thought, language, andcultUre are vtwally three partS of a whole; thought pattems are the products of the influence oflanguage and cultUre on thought. Accordingly, two tyPes of thought patterns, which can help ourunderstanding of translation, are concluded: linguishc thought pattem and cultUral thought pattern.This thesis consistS of sis chaPter:ChaPter One is a brief introduchon to the research proposal and purpose of this thesis.In ChaPter Two, the term of thought is cledfied and diffarent tyPes of thought are classified.Then the relahonship betWeen thought and thought pattem is discussed. And moreover, thepossibility of stUdying thought from the linguistic point of view is presented.ChaPter Three elaborates the languagechought relationshiP and the linguistic infiuence onthought is expounded.ChaPter FOur takes cu1ture into considerahon, and discusses the relationship between cultureand thought as well as thought pattem.Chapter Five makes use of the findings from the researches in the last two chapters toexndne translahon. In this chaPter, the approaches to analyZing and comPallng thoughts andthought patterns in translahon process are offered.Chapter Six sunis up the content of the proceeding chaPters.
