Chen Li was a famous Chinese phonologist in Qing dynasty, he edited .In this book, Chen Li researched in order to find out the originality of .He initiated Fan-qie Xi-lian-fa to research pronunciations of characters in , and he did historic contribution to the study of ancient Chinese language.The focal point of this thesis is to research the syllables which be cut from by Chen Li . People in Tang and Song dynasty added many characters into based on , Chen Li consider that deleting those newly added characters can help to resume the originality of .According to our statistics, Chen Li has cut 120 syllables from .In the second chapter of this thesis we will use form to show if these 120 syllables exist in or , and by the comparison to or , we find out that 62 syllables didn't exist in or , and 58 syllables existed in or .In the third chapter of this thesis, we make an in-depth analysis to 58 syllables which is deleted incorrectly: 1 .If two syllables have the same pronunciation in the same rime, Chen Li said the one must be newly added character. According to this, he deleted 28 syllables. 2.The second character of Fan-qie will represent the final and the tone of the target character. If the situation isn't like this, Chen Li said there must have some newly added character. According to this, he deleted 7 syllables. 3. If the second character of Fan-qie is not in the rime he should in, Chen Li said the target character must be the newly added character in the other rime, he deleted 7 syllables.4. According to and the note of , Chen Li deleted 13 syllables. 5. Chen Li deleted 3 syllables because of other reason.The reason why Chen Li made mistakes can be summed up as two categories. 1.subjective reason: 1) Chen Li attaches importance to Fan-qie, he make light of pronunciation. 2) Chen Li doesn't believe the rime table. 3) Chen Li's researching isn't systemic. 4) Chen Li believes excessively. 2.objective reason: 1) Fan-qie is very complicated. 2) The rime books that Chen Li can see are not very much.We also find that some deleted syllables have relationship with the problem of Chong-niu, the syllable is Kai-kou or He-kou, and these problems can confirm the rime kinds of . We compare the rime kinds of with , the result is the syllables that were deleted incorrectly had influenced the validity of Chen Li's rime kinds.Although Chen Li made some mistakes, he deleted 62 syllables correctly, we can't negate his achievements.
