Comparison Between Artistic And Typical Character

Artistic conception is a unique category of appreciation of the beauty of Chinese nation. It was extracted from poetry creation. We can trace its philosophical foundation back to Zhuang Zi's philosophical thinking before Qin Period. "Artistic conception" was first used in Wang Changlin's <> ,developed little by little and it was getting mature in Tang Dynasty , with the mark of Si Kongtu's "the theory of image out of image" . From Song, especially Ming and Qing Dynasty, the word "feeling and scenery blended "was widely used seemingly instead of artistic conception .As to typical character, in the Western countries, "the image of beauty" was first created by Socrates in ancient Greece. From then , the theory of typical character was born and was developing all the time. The terminology "typical character" was first used by Plato in the field of art. Later, it was Aristotle who summed up the rich experiences of literary and artistic creation in initial dialectical point of view. On the basis of this, he posed and discussed the point of typical character in a relatively systematic way. But the theory of typical character advanced to the height without parallel in history through the theory of typical character of Marxism and accomplished a great leap.Though they originated from different nations, artistic conception and typical character belong to the whole world. They have a close relationship each other from the birth of them because they follow the same creative laws ?reflecting actual life by artistic images, the whole by the part, the ordinary by the individual and the infinite by the finite. As far as artistic conception is concerned, it is toexpress as many meanings as possible by combining real images with virtual ones, by transforming feelings into scenery, namely " image out of image " , " scenery out of scenery" , and so on. As to typical character, it is "to describe all the people carrying water through a person " , "to astonishingly express the most thought within the least area" .However, they show obvious differences because of different national soils. So each of them has its own unique artistic charm. In the thesis, the differences between them will be discussed from the following four aspects.1. The difference of truthfulness. Artistic conception emphasizes the sincere of artists' feeling and the genuine of the conformity between the object of description and people's feeling. But typical character demands that works should describe truly objective reality and reflect certain essence and regularity in social life. In other words, it should reappear typical characters in typical environment truly.2. The difference of unity between subjectivity and objectivity. Artistic conception inclines to the pole of the subjectivity and typical character to the objectivity. The former can make natural images become the ones constructed by artists. As for the latter, an artist should reveal his or her tendency through scenes naturally, and make great efforts to unify the tendentiousness and truthfulness.3. The difference of the characteristic as the whole. As far as artistic conception is concerned, it is mainly displayed through the unity of meanings and scenery in many gradations. In other words, artistic conception is a three -layer structure created by the author and the reader. As to typical character, it emphasizes the unity of all hinds of contradictions, such as universality and particularity, richness and characteristic, uniqueness and profundity and so on.4. The difference of creativity. The purpose of creation and the method is to combine real images with virtual ones while typical example is to reveal the truth by typification.The sources of resulting in all kinds of differences are to be discussed further from different angles, such as geography, politics, economics, culture, philosophy and so on.
