With Sun yat-sen and the Guomindang as the reference frame and through investigation into the estrangement and co-operation between the Youth Party like Zengqi and the Guomindang before and after the Northern Expedition, this thesis intends to refrect the ideas and activities of the Youth Party members headed by Zengqi between the May 4th Movement and the Northern Expedition and then to prove that the Youth Party Members like Zengqi were not a passive object but a relatively independent and active entity during that period. The co-operation between Zengqi and the Guomindang Party was because of, on the one hand, his revolutionary tendency that arose in his early educational years, his participation in revolution, his admiration for Sun Yat-sen and his sympathy for cause of revolution;0n the other hand, it was because of the impact from the May 4lh Movement and his susceptibility to the influence of the Guomindang. Therefore, the nationalism that Zengqi advocated was in accord with tha Three People s Principles practiced by the Guomindang .also there was no disagreement on political ideas such as all-people politics between Zengqi and the Guomindang Party. Governed by Democratic politics and concerned with the future of the country, Zengqi was tolerant of the Guomindang, and owing to their political need, the Guomindang did not exclude the Youth Party during their reorganization. The estrangement between Zengqi and The Guomindang was Mainly caused by the differences between the two political roles. First, Zengqi opposed Russia and the Communist Party while the Guomindang, for their growth, had to ally with Russia and rolerate the Communist Party. Secondly,Zengqi advocated democratic politics, while the Guomindang, growing to be themainstream in politics, practiced theone-party dictatorship. Thirdly, the Communist Party obstructed and the Guomindang and the Youth Party differed in their Development needs and their ideas. Thus, Zengqi played the role of reserved friend of the Guomindang and criticized seriously the Guomindang s politics of allying with Russia and tolerating the Communist Party and one-party dictatorship.Regarding the Youth Party members as dissidents, the Guomindang excluded them unscrupulously. Zengqi had some wrong ideas about the Guomindang s cleaning up party. He thought cleaning up party meant eliminating the Communist Party.Actually, the targets of cleaning up included not only the Communist Party but also the Youth Party members such as Zengqi. As a matter of fact, not only around the Northern Expedition, but also throughout the period of the Repulic of China, the Youth Party and the Guomindang had such relationship:getting near, they co-operated;getting far, they became estranged. To the Youth Party members, the degree of co-operation or estrangement was determined by the principle of democratic politics; To the Guomindang, it was determined by whether all the rights belonged to them. Actually, their choice of co-operation and estrangement was largely determined by their relative political status and their opportunities for survival brought by the political room in the Republic of China. Hadn't there been broad room for political activity, whether the Youth Party would survive the fierce political struggle in the Republic of China would remain to be doubted.
