Among various troop organization in the Northern Song Dynasty, Qiangzhuang and Yiyong play an important part for their large scale, long duration and good management system. This paper is a case study of the two organizations. The paper falls into three parts.The first part focuses on the development and evolution of Qiangzhuang and Yiyong in different periods of Northern Song Dynasty. The discussion is made from four aspects: first, the establishment, development and abolition of Qiangzhuang(1000-1042), second, the establishment and development of Yiyong(1042~1068), Third, the evolution and gradual merging into Baojia of Yiyong(1068-1081). Forth, the partial resumption of Yiyong(1085-1127).Part Two discusses the management of Qiangzhuang and Yiyong from seven aspects, namely, the recruit, the treatment and salary, the troop size and disposition, the training and parade, the duty the filing up and replacement of soldiers and the military leadership system of Qiangzhuang and Yiyong.Part three is the conclusion. The althorn claims that the basis of recruit system had lost since the mid. Tang dynasty. Then the author further analyzes the reasons of the failure recruit system with recruit respondent as its main content. The analysis is made from the staring point of military power of Qiangzhuang and Yiyong, and three aspects: land occupation situation, rank structure and technical condition.
