ADV-Intensifiers In Maritime Treaty English

With an overview of the relevant literature and researches on adv-intensifiers, this thesis is aiming at finding out the distribution rules and the usage of intensifiers in maritime treaty English. To achieve this, besides the corpus of maritime treaty English (MTE), the other corpora that represent different varieties of English have been used. Those corpora include MEE. NEC. T4. LOBA, and BROWNA. In addition, two statistical methods chi-squarc test and z test are employed to facilitate quantitative analysis and ensure the robustness of the results.The analysis shows that the frequency of adv-intensifiers in MTE is far lower than that in the other corpora: arr.onsj. all the occurrences of adv-intensifiers in MTE, amplifiers share a wider distribution than dowtoners. central intensifiers wider than peripheral intensifiers.
