Cohesion In Enlish-Chinese Translation

Translating is an interlingual activity. A comparative linguistic study may shed some light on the process of translating. In the perspective of text linguistics, this thesis focuses on the comparative study of cohesion, which is one of the two significant ties of holding the text together, both in English and Chinese, and their relevance to English-Chinese translation. By discussing some best known and most detailed model of cohesion available, namely reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion, this thesis maintains that a better understanding of the similarities and differences of cohesion in both the source and target languages is of great value in the thorough comprehension of the source text, and the re-creation of the target text to be accepted by the reader as a text in its own right. What's more, the author of the thesis also suggests that the translator properly deal with the different patterns of cohesion in English-Chinese translation so as to achieve faithfulness, smoothness, and functional equivalence in translation. Moreover, suggestive translation techniques are exemplified.
