In the introduction,I point out that the value of Zhangwei's novel " An Ancient Ship " keeps in many ways. The historical value is one-side,but its dominant value is to analyze the essence of human being,to contact with the humanity closely,to probe into the ideal of personality deeply and to pay much attention to human being's mission of self-rescue and self-atonement such great problems. In a word,its leading value is embodied to expose the problems about human being. Therefore,this thesis's main aim is to reveal the novel's implication of the study of man by a view of human being.The first chapter mainly states how the visual angle of human being is expressed in "An Ancient Ship " . It is divided into(1)plot is served for human being;(2)structure is served for human being,and tries to illustrate man is not only the hero of the constitute of the works' form but the hero of the constitute of the works' significance as well. It is obvious and doubtless that the function of literature is to advocate morality and justice.The second and the third chapter stress on what kinds of thoughts of the study of man implicate in the novel. The second chapter faces the authentic conditions of human being through penetrating the desire of common man and woman and the god's personification and digs outthe contents that hide behind the characters' external characteristic and are always neglected consciously of unconsciously by people. So to do,the chapter tells us:whatever thoughts and behaviors of desolating human being's desire will go wrong;man isn't god,but to be man. The third chapter integrating with the historical facts,analyzes Bao Pu such an image's thoughts and characteristics,points out the real purpose why he lived alone in the grinding house,makes clear the light's mission and function in the novel,then describe the change of such characters as Jian Su's thoughts and knowledge and lays my finger on the ideal of personality advocated in the work:(1)moral personality;(2)independent personality;(3)personality of wisdom,which is a combination of the three. And such an ideal of personality is finally reflected in the character,Bao Su. He went out from the old grinding house,which means the final victory of the ideal of personality.In the conclusion,this thesis states briefly the relationship between the angle of the study of man and other angles in the criticisms of " An Ancient Ship " and I illustrate the writing style of this thesis in the end.
