This thesis centers the readers of The Dream in Red Mansion since its publication two and a half centuries ago. I make a study of the common readers, critics and authors accepting the artistic images of Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai and of the concerned reasons.Besides, I also explore the readers' aesthetic consciousness and cultural attitudes. The images of Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai have been accepted over 200 years and this process can be divided into four parts, Accordingly, this thesis has four sections. The first section centers the acceptability from the mid-18th century to the 19th centuny According to different acceptable forms, I sort out many critics' appreciation and understanding of Lin-and-Xue images, such as Zhi Yanzhai, the groups of criticizing, alluding and composing poems, the authors of dramas and popular legends, of the continued books and of folklores. And I also lay stress on the diversity of the acceptable forms in this stage. The second section centers the acceptability during the former part of the 20th century. According to the readers' different attitudes toward Lin-and-Xue, I make a systematic study of the understanding and appreciation of the two images by the 20th century's authors who have different ideological trend, aesthetic interest and academic pursuit. I emphasize the complicity of the main body of the acceptability in this period. The third section centers the acceptability from the 1940s to the end of 1970s. In order of time, I explore the historical process of the formation and development of the idea that Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai are inharmonic. And I lay stress on the singleness of the acceptability of Lin-and-Xue images .The fourth section centers the acceptability during the late twenty years of the 20th century. In this section, I describe the readers' changing attitudes toward Lin-and-Xue. Besides. I explore the Chinese people's transition of the ideology and aesthetic consciousness in this period. In the conclusion, I sum up the history of the Lin-and-Xue images which last two and a half centuries as well as the limitless openness of the acceptability and valuable instructions to the readers.
