Research And Analysis Of The Streets In Macao

Macao, which was reigned by Portugal for more than 400 years, is a land belongs to China. She is provided with Chinese traditional culture and at the same time mixed with Portuguese culture. The streets of Macao are named in both Chinese and Portuguese. This can exactly reflect the mixture of Chinese and Portuguese culture. And that is the feature of the street names in Macao. That's why it's deserved to be studied.In this paper, we look into the street names in Macao. This research is made by gathering and calculating all the street names of Macao, consulting history and street reference books of Macao, observing and studying the streets in Macao, interviewing the Macao residents, and then we draw a conclusion and make an analysis to the language element of the street names. It reveals the features of the street names in Macao from the linguistics angle. Through the research and discussion of the street names, it gives us a practical meaning of understanding the past, the living, the language and culture of Macao.There are six chapters in this study. Firstly, we introduce the relationship between the Macao history and the names of the streets. Then we tell you about how the street names come from, the structure of the street names, the language phenomena and the mixture of the culture. The special sensational meaning in the street names is also the content we discuss on this paper. Though there is some defect on the transliteration of the street names in Portuguese, it is the special feature of the street names in Macao and we would make some comments on this as well. Finally, we discuss about the disposal of some street names after the handover and give some suggestions as the reference for the amendments of the street names after the handover.
