The research of the relationship between Language and Culture has become an important topic in the circle of foreign languages learning since late 1980s in China. This paper discusses the cultural differences between East (mainly China) and West in several aspects based on several theories. Two cultural differences are discussed here: one is individualism vs. collectivism between the western culture and eastern culture; the other is extrovert coastal-trading vs. introvert continental-farming. And then some specific examples distinguishing their differences are presented as followed afterwards. The structure of culture is illustrated and nature of language is analyzed in detail based on some theories, too. And the close relationship between culture and language teaching is also discussed in every detail in the paper and the situation of foreign language teaching is reported in some other countries as well. The purpose of this paper is to tell foreign language teachers/instructors and students/learners that culture plays an important role in learning a foreign language 梑oth native language culture and target language culture. So we should have cultural awareness in foreign language teaching or learning in order to master a foreign language. As an English teacher myself for over 15 years in college, I hope my paper will be of some help to learners interested in this topic.
