The thesis investigates ail-roundly the calligraphy of transcribing Buddhism scriptures of Dunhuang in the Northern Wei Dynasty,which is contextualized in the specially social and historical background,mainly with the textual,comparative research method in order to approach the historical facts as much as possible and sketch out the overall features of the calligraphy and the development course of it on the basis of mastering accurately the manuscripts and material references. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part,the survey of transcribing Buddhism scriptures of Dunhuang in Northern Wei Dynasty,investigates the Buddhism tradition of Dunhuang,the translation and transcription of Buddhism scriptures,in the meanwhile,it probes into the relationships between the rulers of Northern Wei and transcribing,and other issues such as the institution of transcribing Buddhism scriptures and the calligraphy education. The second part,the calligraphic styles and features of transcribing Buddhism scriptures of Dunhuang in the Northern Wei Dynasty,analyses concretely the scrolls with distinctive calligraphic features and clear prologues,and compares the transcription works with other calligraphic ones in order to show the features of the transcription and people's aesthetic values on the calligraphy of it.
