Edith Wharton was a writer who had a strongwell-informed feeling for great literature in America. Her fictions selected the New York wealthy society as the background, showing the readers a vivid picture. The novel The Age of Innocence won her Pulitzer Prize, and edited into play and movie.In the novel, Wharton used a series of writing skills. This thesis aims on one of her typical artistic methods-art of contrast, analyzing the use of different contrast-contrast in characters, plot, setting and structure and the efforts they executed as well.At the same time, the thesis portrays Edith Wharton-a woman writer with good establishment. She was intimacy with the Old New York and condemned it. To some degree, this novel indicates her paradoxical feelings.
