The thesis is divided into five parts. The first four parts intend to offer a general account of the theory of literary fiction, based on the western literary theory. During the rise of the theory, though the opinions about literary fiction are very loose and unsystematic, some of which lacking the characteristic of theory, they have a profound influence on the consequent theory of literary fiction and therefore their value in itself is unquestionable. In the period of romanticism, great changes took place about the theory. It was paid a lot attention by literary theorists and the writers as well as an important means to embody the personal creativity of writers and poets. In the period of modernism, many literary theorists and aesthetic theorists began to study the issue of literary fiction in terms of level of literary works. In the period of postmodernism when everything dispelled, including literature and non-literature, fiction and non-fiction. Fiction existed everywhere. The term-literary fiction began to lose its own connotation and hard to define. The fifth part gives a relevant analysis and comment on the theory illustrated in the four periods, with the emphasis on the reason why there appears a sharp conflict on the theory of literary fiction between the period of modernism and the period of postmodernism.
