This thesis studies dramatic translation with interpersonal function of the systemic functional grammar. Equivalence of Interpersonal Function (EIF) in translation is proposed to measure the dialogues extracted from the play Pygmalion and the tape record of the adapted film My Fair Lady.It is widely acknowledged that translation aims to achieve both formal equivalence of intratextual (content-oriented and form-oriented) factors and functional equivalence of extratextual(situational and, above all, recipient -oriented) factors. Systemic functional grammar maintains that tenor of discourse in context can be realized by interpersonal function in text. Through this relation of context and text, EIF can specify the situational factors in the higher degree of functional equivalence and produce in receptors the capacity for a response very close to what the original readers experienced. EIF can color the TT speech by achieving equivalence in interpersonal meanings concerning role relationship and speaker's attitude. Play/film is characterized by some spoken features of live speech. EIF can make the TT more performable and speakable, hence easier to be accepted by the TL receptors. In the semiotic system of language, interpersonal function at semantic level can realize tenor upwardly in context and can be realized downwardly at lexico-grammatical and phonological/graphological level. Tenor of discourse can show formality represented by the continuation of power, contact and affective involvement. Interpersonal function basically involves speech function and the attitude embodied in it. It can be realized at lexico-grammatical level by informal slang, vulgarisms, ellipses, tags, etc., formal complex sentences, nominalization, and vocatives, modalization with both formal and informal style; at phonological/graphological level by allophone/allograph. The vernacular (non-standard English) may have features at the two levels. Speech function can be realized simultaneously by mood at lexico-grammatical level and key at phonological/graphologicallevel. EIF is measured by exploring these realization patterns under the guidance of formality in tenor of discourse and speech function in interpersonal function, 'functional isomorph' is used to achieve 'total translation', replacing ST features at lexico-grammatical and phonological/ graphologicals level with corresponding lexico-grammatical terms in TT and maintaining the same formality and social stigma.EIF can specify cultural adaptation and is used in drama/film translation and interpretation.
