This dissertation, grounded on the theories of needs analysis and material evaluation in ESP study, proposes evaluation criteria specific for marketing-based English textbooks through field survey at Chongqing University. Based on the criteria, evaluation of three textbooks being used at Chongqing University for marketing-based English course is conducted aiming at providing new suggestions for selection and development of marketing-based English textbooks. Chapter One introduces the reform of College English Syllabus and the present situation of subject-based English teaching at colleges and universities and elucidates the aim and practical significance of this study on marketing-based English textbooks. Chapter Two generalizes the development of needs analysis theory in ESP study, points out the necessity of material evaluation and briefs the evaluation models for ESP materials. Chapter Three explains the targets, devices and procedures of the investigation in this study under the guidance of needs analysis framework by Hutchinson & Waters and material evaluation criteria by Hutchinson & Waters and Mcdonough & C.Shaw.Chapter Four proposes a set of evaluation criteria for marketing-based English textbooks after thorough analysis of the investigation into the needs of marketing majors at Chongqing University on SBE course. Evaluation of the three textbooks used at Chongqing University based on the criteria is later carried out. Chapter Five first of all summarizes the findings of evaluation of the three textbooks, and then gives some implications on material and teaching of subject-based English course. Finally, limitations of this study are pointed out, on the basis of which further research is outlined and recommended.
