There are two or more ways of expressing the sarne proposition in English.Linguists have tried to account for this phenomenon from different perspectives. M. A.K. Halliday interprets this phenomenon in terms of gramrnatical metaPhor. The amhorof this paper, based on Halliday's framework, makes a preliminary analysis of the threegrarnmatical metaphors, narnely, ideational metaPhof, inierpersonal metaphor andtextual metaphor. One thing I must make clear here is that although Halliday does notinclude textual metaphor in his book An Introduction to Functional Granunar, otherscholars such as J.R. Martin, G.Thompson, Hu zhuanglin, Huang guowen, Fanwenfang and so on argue for the existence of textual metaphor. So, in this paper, I justsynthesize the results of the above-mentioned scholars, and propose my own point ofview right or wrong, I am open to criticism.Grammatical metaphor, like lexical metaphor, is prevalent in language, and themastery of grammatical metaphor will be of great help to both teachers and studenis.
