With the increasing development of international trade, the study and research of English, especially business English are receiving more attention and recognition. The research of business English covers various fields including linguistics, culture, social psychology and so on. Despite the late initiation of translation studies of business English, it has made great progress. Particularly, the recent translation studies from pragmatics, communication and discourse analysis break out a complete new situation. In this thesis, the writer has studied English texts and Chinese versions of the cover stories in BusinessWeek from Theme-Rheme, Thematic Progression (TP) and Method of Development (MOD). In the study, this writer has randomly chosen eight English articles from the magazine of 2001 to 2002 and their counterpart Chinese versions as the corpora for comparison and analysis. This writer has studied 72 paragraphs (English ones and their counterpart Chinese translations) and generalized 7 patterns of TP and 5 patterns of MOD. After the comparative study of English texts and Chinese versions, the writer has compared their similarities and differences, summarized 5 categories of differences in developing structural cohesion, and sought out 5 approaches to explain why Chinese translators cannot keep the structural cohesive devices in their translating activities. Therefore, we can expect that the awareness and application of structural cohesive devices in translation studies are conducive to keep the structural cohesion through the whole text and realize the functional consistence. This writer aims to arouse more research on translation studies from discourse analysis after this comparative study, to explain translation activities and solve translating difficulties by means of applied linguistics. Meanwhile, the writer wishes that this pilot study is helpful for English learners in studying this analysis approach.
