As the first American female writer who won the Nobel Prize in literature, Pearl Buck's House of Earth trilogy has engendered far-reaching influence. This thesis analyses the trilogy on the basis of the relations between culture and literature. Pearl Buck was an American who spent nearly 40 years in China. Having received both Chinese and American educations and affected by both Chinese and American cultures, she held deep affections with China, and was greatly influenced by American culture. This special experience provided her so unique conditions that she was capable of observing and depicting Chinese farmers from a unique angle. Despite the obvious limitations of the trilogy, it gives the west world a relatively objective introduction of China, enhances the understanding of the west to China. She herself also made considerable contributions to the Sino-US cultural exchanges. The trilogy is a good reflection of deep impact of cultures on literature. Under new historical conditions, it is of great practical significances to re-recognize Pearl Buck as well as her works.
