| By discussing the literary Creation of modern Chinese Writers in the depressed time, this thesis aims at presenting that the literary art is possible to console human minds in a larger scope and it can also provide the contemporary writers and readers with salutary lessons. This thesis argues that the treatment function of literature is the fourth function of literature and should be included in teaching materials of literary theory. At the same time, this thesis emphasizes that at the bank-ground that once the spiritual dilemma became a difficulty at present time, people should be use literature (art) as a perspective and rational way with efficiency to comfort the troubled minds of writers' as well as the Whole human beings' and to find a spiritual homeland for human beings.This thesis includes two chapters: The first chapter is to probe into the theory of the treatment function of literature involving five issues: the psychological basis for the treatment function of literature; the aesthetic basis for the treatment function of literature; literature as the spiritual homeland for human beings; the characteristics of the literary works of modern Chinese writers in the depressed time and the ways to the treatment function of literature; the significance and the limitations of the treatment function of literature.1 The psychological basis for the treatment function of literature. The treatment function of literature may date back to Aristotle's "purification" and Freud's psychoanalysis theory, which pays attention to the treatment function for mental troubles by artistic release. Psychologists thinks that the spiritual depression, if not being released, will lead to disaster and if it is released in time, the mind will be consoled and become healthy.2.The aesthetic basis for the treatment function of literature. With the introduction of the irrational factors of the modern philosophy from the west, some modern writers such as LuXun, GuoMoruo, and YuDafu, who are influenced by the western culture atan earlier time, began to pay close attention to the perceptual life of man and the colorful inner world of man for the first time. The literary creation of modern Chinese writers, with the efforts paid by western aesthetes to regress to the subject at modern time, become more and more internalized and directly pointed to the subject's inner world, which had been hidden by traditions.3.Literature as the spiritual homeland for human beings. It relates and analyses that from the history and the reality of the treatment function of literature, and the surviving dilemma faced the contemporary people as well as the writers and readers, the art is a safe way to rescue oneself. Art is the spiritual homeland for both the writers and the whole human beings to rely on.4.The characteristics of the literary works of modern Chinese writers in the depressed time and the ways to the treatment function of literature. The treatment function of literature on the three levels of irrationalism, rationalism and ultra-rationalism respectively correspond to the three basic needs of releasing the negative emotion, regressing to the social orders and aesthetics. Literary works meet the demands of the writers with different qualities and various depressions, from the three basic needs or repairers and cure their irregular minds by a comprehensive treatment of these basic needs.5.The significance and limitations of the treatment function of literature.
