In history of philosophy, there always exists a controversy between the cognosciblism and the agnosticism about the relation of thinking and existence. A critical study about the cognosciblism and the agnosticism in history of philosophy is made to unify the contradiction on the basis of the reconsideration about thinking and existence.Ancient cognosciblism asserted that existence is thinking through defining the world's noumenon as existence prior to exploring into epistemic questions. So in essence, they considered the product of reason as existence. Thus, their so-called the unity of thinking and existence is in essence the unity of thinking and thinking itself. Ancient agnosticism denied that the cognition of mankind could attain to existence by emphasizing the subjectivity of senses.Modern cognosciblism involves idealist cognosciblism and materialist cognosciblism. The former understood existence as thinking, while in my opinion the latter considered the thinking as existence. In essence, the unity what they said are still the unity of thinking and existence. In contrast to ancient cognosciblism, Modern cognosciblism stressed the process of the unity of thinking and existence. Modern agnosticism denied that subjective cognition could attain to objective existence by stressing the primacy of subject.Post-modern cognosciblism defined the irrational human emotions and volitions as real existence. They argued that we could attain to existence by our irrational intuition or experience, and at the same time, criticized the orthodox cognosciblism. Post-Modern agnosticism stressed the monad of subject world by attempting to transcend the dichotomy of subject and object, which is an extreme agnosticism. The confrontation between the cognosciblism and agnosticism results from their different understanding of existence. The former understood the reality as existence, while the latter rejected existence. My conclusion is: Existence exists out there, but we can't reach it. In a sense, I think we presumed to have acquired the "Truth", but in reality, we have just acquired nothing but a kind of opinion.
