Pure Poetry Theory In China In The 20th Century

Pure Poetry theory was made a start in the Occident. Since it propagated to China, Pure Poetry theory has been highlighting in three respective periods. In this article, with the 20th century as a frame of time, the author intends to study the fate of Pure Poetry theory in China as a whole. On the one hand, the author intends to draw the outline of Pure Poetry theory, so as to demonstrate that the respective situations in the three periods have something in common and they all display some characteristics of the time. The author has the purpose present readers an overall understanding of the fate of Pure Poetry theory. On other hand, the author intends to study the deeper causes that have effects on Pure Poetry theory. Moreover, the author holds that the poetics is a mirror to some culture pattern and is fundamentally influenced by it. The author puts forward that it is the unique characteristics of Chinese modern culture that leads to the vicissitudes of Pure Poetry theory and its distinct characteristics of the time.In part one, the author gives a brief account of Pure Poetry theory ranging from Edgar Allan Poe to Paul Valery, intending to present readers a clear understanding of Western Pure Poetry theory and creating a comparable system to Chinese Pure Poetry theory.In part two, the article begins with the cultural causes that lead to the lack of Pure Poetry theory in ancient China. Then the author expounds the beginning, the development, the influence and the decline of Pure Poetry theory in 1920s and 1930s. In this part, the author explains the separation between the perceptual and the rational in Pure Poetry theory and the inherent non-pure characteristics of it.In part three, the article begins with an analysis of the background of Pure Poetry theory in Tai Wan. Then, through the commenting on the present situation of Pure Poetry theory in Tai Wan, the author points out that from the separation of the perceptual and the rational to their fusion is typical of Pure Poetry theory in Tai Wan. Finally, we probe into the influence of Pure Poetry theory in Tai Wan.In part four, the article starts with an analysis of the social and cultural background of Pure Poetry theory in 1980s. Then, we expound the discussion of Pure Poetry theory in 1980s and in 1990s respectively and point out the broaden tendency of its meaning during that time. Finally, the author expounds the influence of two talks about Pure Poetry theory.In part five, the article expounds the fate of Chinese Pure Poetry theory in the 20th century once again. We also probe further into the charm and the present significance of Pure Poetry.
