The dissertation aims at neither introducing basic content of literary trends in the late 20th century, nor writing a rich history of literary trends of China in the late 20th century after surveying literary trends in terms of history. It intends to sort out seven issues for analysis, which can represent the development of literary trends of China in the late 20th century. The analysis not only reveals the logical relations of seven issues, and the unity of literary trends of China in the late 20th century, but also provides a fair and objective evaluation of numerous and complicated literary trends in order to shed lights on the academic development. The dissertation consists of three parts. Part One (from Chapter One to Chapter Four) unfolds blatancy of the discourse of new enlightenment and the tendency of literary trends returning to themselves through accounts of questions left over by history, theory of literary subjectivity, methodology of literary and art studies, literary ontological theory.Part Two (Chapter Five and Chapter Six) clarifies the tendencies resulted from the disintegration of culture in the transitional period: mass culture is increasingly taking the leading place; postmodern critics in China overturn and deconstruct modern enlightenment. It also points out the influence of mass culture on literature and analyzes problems of mass culture criticism. It stresses the mutual complement of modernity and postmodernism to speed up the project of nearing modernity in China. It also claims that postmodernism is not the way out in terms of Chinese literature, literary theory and culture.Part Three (Chapter Seven) points out two states of globalization: globalization of monistic culture development pattern based on Western enlightenment; globalization of postmodernism. The former is Europe-centered or America-centered, while the latter approaches rupture and conflict though it emphasizes differences, non-centeredness and pluralism. Therefore, the dissertation proposes globalization of communication and dialogue, which will surpass limitations of the previous two globalizations. Based on this globalization,it analyzes literary theory, culture aphasia and postcolonialism in order to create and construct literary theory and culture, and to perform a dialogue with western literary theory and culture on a higher basis. From the above analysis, we can draw the conclusion of logical relations in literary trends of China in the late 20th century: from enormous narrative of ideology discourse in the period of new enlightenment and efforts to reverting to literature itself, to cultural disintegration and questioning and reconstructing new enlightenment brought about by radical changes of society, economics, politics, and culture, to surpassing the antinomy between globalization of monistic culture development pattern of western modern enlightenment and postmodern globalization claiming differences, rupture, and conflicts, and finally to communication, dialogue and construction. Furthermore, the dissertation has made an objective analysis of limitations of literary trends in the late 20th century based on confirming their value and significance.
