Under the background of War, the novel theory of the 1940s has its owncharacter that differs from the other novel theories. In the novel theory of thistime, there are increasing utility of War. Novels have stopped being analyzedas an art exclusively. They are more likely to be studied together with War orpolicies. The criterion for novel fidelity and the author's tendency can hardlybe generalized. While some novel theory has become a main stream, someothers have also found their own places as being unique or artistic. All this,to some extent, has enriched and developed the novel theory of the 1940s.What's more, the theories of this period have carried on the traditional ideasof the late-Qing Dynasty novel criticism. They also developed themselves onthe basis of the 20s' and the 30s' theories. Therefore, since the foundation ofthe P.R.C, the 1940s' novel theory has inspired and paved way for the newnovel criticism. Only when we understand the theory of novels in the 1940s,can we really have a general view of the 20th-century Chinese novel theory.
