On The War In The 40 National Disaster Novel

This dissertation investigates the novels of national calamity, which had been prospering during period of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1940s. Thus, we could know the novels of national calamity's true visage, above which we can deeply probe into some important aspects of this kind of novels. They include not only the meanings of tragedy and the artistic characteristics of these novels but also the status and significance in the history of Chinese literature. From this thesis, I try to provide a sort of consider and use for reference for our light literature study. The straight matter includes seven chapters. The first chapter gives a definition of the novels of national calamity and also introduces the actual situations of research in this area. The second chapter discusses the general picture and tendency of the novels of national calamity in 1930s. The third chapter describes the prosperity of the novels of national calamity, which presents four characteristics, such as the background of national calamity, the historical theme, the usage of cynical technique and the strong nationalism. The fourth chapter analyzes the reasons of their prosperity, we think, which may relate to three facets. They are the good environments, the development of literary theory and the wider market. The fifth chapter recommends some representative novels of national calamity. The sixth chapter expatiates on the meanings of tragedy, which is one of the important sides of the novels of national calamity. The seventh chapter focuses on the characteristics of these novels, which involves their connotations, technique and style. The epilogue parses their status and significance in the history of Chinese literature.
