Reflections On The Classification Of Martin's Textual Grammatical Metaphor

This thesis carries on a research of Martin's classification of textual grammatical metaphor(TGM). It points out the positive points and negative points in his classification of TGM respectively. The author offers two types, text substitution and textual transitivity process to complement Martin's classification. This paper is divided into four parts.Chapter one is introduction. It introduces the background of this topic and presents a general survey of the development of metaphor theory. It makes clear about the content, purpose, significance and method of this study.Chapter two presents a detailed description of the Martin's classification of TGM. His classification includes five types: meta-message relation, text reference, internal conjunction, negotiating texture and metaphorical theme. Examples are used to illustrate them.Chapter three is about the author's understanding and two pieces of complementary advice. First, it points out the positive points of Martin's classification, that is, his classification forms its own system, research scope and method and it contributes a lot to the formation of good texts. Second, it points out the negative points and recommends two types, text substitution and textual transitivity process to the classification. It also defends the possibility of the two new types.The last chapter is conclusion. It can be concluded that a seven-type classification of TGM is formed: meta-message relation, text reference, text substitution, internal conjunction, negotiating texture, metaphorical theme and textual transitivity process.In sum, this paper is a tentative effort towards perfecting the classification of TGM.
