In existing ESP literature, awareness of needs and needs analysis as the most typical feature of ESP have been largely agreed on. The learner's needs may conflict with the teacher's(needs conflict), which has been noticed by some experts of ESP. Based on 'learner-centered' conception and Richards' process-oriented model of curriculum design as well as a survey study of needs conflict, the present author conducts an experimental study and a case study so as to define the relationship between needs conflict and learning outcome, and seek means of balancing the conflict against practical classroom constraints. The results of studies suggest that the existing of needs conflict may prevent the learners from making expected progress and the conflictcan be eased up by taking advantage of learner-centered approach and negotiation strategy.
