D.H. Lawrence is a gifted writer whose works investigate the most inner realms of human life- the instinctual desire, and depict vividly all human feelings and experiences, such as their struggles, pains, crises and enjoyment. Lawrence finds out the decisive effect of healthy, natural love psychology upon the life integrity and personality soundness of a person. His deep exploration into the sub-conscious instinct centering on sexual psyche makes him the subject of controversy since 20th century and also brings him reputation as one of the most influential and creative characters in English literature.Literary works are an artistic means for a writer to express his or her observation of and views on the world. A writer's aesthetic angle of view and the creation level of his production have many affinities. The angle of view not only shows how he feels about life, but also exhibits his unique self-awareness and subjective perspective on life. From macrocosmic investigation of literary history, realistic literature emphasizes the representation of life as it actually is, in other words, the fidelity to appearance is its major concern. On the other hand, modernist writers, influenced by modern psychology and irrational philosophies, articulate an introverted aesthetic criterion on literary works. They argue against absolute true-to-life productions, and insist on detecting the inner or instinctive world of a person through his fantasy, illusion, or other sub-conscious behaviors. These writers focus their writing objective on man's inner universe (psychological field) instead of his outer universe (physical realm). As far as the fictions of D.H. Lawrence are concerned, his literary aesthetic angle is both extroverted and introverted while the latter is more distinct. This introverted aesthetic angle, which represents as one of the most important writing features of modernist literature, diverts the attention from the outer objective worldto the subjective sub-conscious world, providing foothold for a literary exposition of various mental crises, psychological conflicts and unconscious irrational behaviors of human being. The vitalest philosophy of Lawrence decrees, "a work of art should be judged neither by its fidelity to appearance, nor by purely aesthetic criteria, but by its tendency to intensify man's true will- to-life, which is so much in disguise by one's senses that fades over years to the most secret corner of human heart." Lawrence stresses that the preoccupation of fiction writers is to nakedly reveal the unknown and ignored factors within one's soul so as to balance their profound split of personality. They should also endeavor to start a perpetual research on human nature, natural instinct and spiritual state.Lawrence's depiction of human psychology is extremely different from that of traditional realistic writers who only have an interest in the realm of consciousness and ignore or even deny the existence of sub-consciousness. He determines to open the "black box" of sub-consciousness in the depth of one's soul and expose one's archetypal self by piercing the surface of consciousness for "the blood relationship beneath". He also advocates the abandonment of superficial personality and the reversion of one's real desire-to-life. This is why in Lawrence's works, readers hardly find the "old and stable self but only "another self with split personality, who experiences pains and anxiety because of the strains and struggles of his/her soul and flesh, who is lost in a roily and black world which makes no sense to the "outer self, groaning and shouting.Lawrence is no doubt a writing wit, he breaks loose the fetter of literary genres and describes the world in his eyes in an unique style. His works profoundly attack the essence of the dissimilation of capitalist mechanism civilization and expose those human relationships which are much twisted by the constraints of industrial civilization, figuring out harmonious and ideal relationships to his own perspective, especially the one between the two...
