In the history of British literature,David Herbert Lawrence(1885-1930)is one of the most controversial writers.Because of his explicit description of the sex he receives widespread criticism.At the same time,his works are dubbed as “pornography” and banned for a long period of time.Love is the eternal topic of human life and literature works.Especially most of Lawrence's works deal with love.In his works,discussing love is the most important theme.And the love patterns he analyses are various.Women in Love is his most typical work that describes love.Through describing the love experience of Gudrun and Ursula Lawrence expounds that only when men and women keep each other's independence and integrity can they harvest the harmonious love.This thesis intends to explore Lawrence's views on the relationship between men and women through close and speculative reading of Women in Love.It mainly consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction.It introduces Lawrence and his masterpiece Women in Love as well as the recent years' research condition at home and abroad.The second part illustrates Lawrence's blood-consciousness theory and his sexual polarity theory.Blood-consciousness is Lawrence's important psychological theory.Pursuing harmonious sexual relationship is the recurring theme in Lawrence's works.Lawrence realizes that only through the combination of spirit and body can human beings reestablish a harmonious relationship between men and women.The establishment of ideal and harmonious relationship between the sexes is the key to solve the social problems and it is the first step to the ideal world.The third part describes two kinds of abnormal love patterns.The first one is the spiritual love without physical integration between Birkin and Hermione Roddice.The second one is the physical love without spiritual communion between Gerald and Gudrun.Evidently,this two kinds of love fail to meet the standard that the perfect integration between body and soul which Lawrence advocates.Therefore,it inevitably leads to their love failure.The fourth part illustrates a kind of ideal and harmonious sexual relationship that Lawrence explores hardly: the integration between body and soul.Birkin and Ursula keep each other's independence and integrity in their mutual communication,and they receive the union of spirit and flesh finally.Their love pattern embodies Lawrence's sexual polarity theory.The fifth part is the summary of the whole thesis.Women in Love is a classical work in which Lawrence describes love.Lawrence believes that the love between men and women is the greatest and most perfect emotion in the world.It is the perfect heart throb,contraction and relaxation of life.He holds that the sexual relationship is the basic relationship in human society.The harmonious sexual relationship is of greatimportance to marriage,family and society.Exploring Lawrence's views on the relationship between men and women can help the readers to understand the images of the characters,their traits and the themes of novels better.
