Along with the shift of the focus in English language learning from "How to teach" to "How to learn", the study on language learners has been deepened and developed step by step. Language learning strategies (LLS), as one part of individual differences in second language acquisition, has also drawn much attention of English language researchers and teachers.Language learning strategies not only refer to the specific techniques and skills that learners use to accelerate language acquisition, but also refer to the beliefs that direct such techniques and skills. Beliefs combine with actions, and under the influence of outside factors (situational factors and learner factors), the system of language learning strategies is formed. The good functioning of the system of LLS is the basis of successful language acquisition. How to make language learners' system of LLS function well is what English language teachers are concerned about, and also is the thesis of this dissertation. Hence the author conducted a survey about learners' preferences of English language learning strategies. The subjects are 70 non-English major undergraduates. Results of the survey show that in English language learning, many subjects' beliefs don't combine closely with their actions and many of them are anxious about their English language learning to some extent. Their surface motivation of English language learning takes the leading part and many of them don't realize that personality has also the influence on language learning. Among their concrete English learning actions, they pay more attention to listening and intensive reading while neglecting oral practice, extensive reading and writing. The dissertation points out that under the favorable influence of situational factors and learner factors, a solid guarantee for language learning is to help language learners adjust the relationship between language learning beliefs and actions to make the system of LLS function well. As to how to adjust the relationship between each factor in the system of LLS, a large number of suggestions are given from the angle of learners and teachers respectively.
