The establishment of the UNNC (the University of Nottingham Ningbo China), as the symbol of the introduction of western educational system to China, provided us with the opportunity to make a close study on the western style of English teaching and learning. By observing its first year of teaching operation, it was found that the uniqueness of the British educational system lay in its flexibility, practicality and individuality. This research is an investigation of strategy adjustment of Chinese learners under the British education system in China. Its ultimate purpose is to understand the British education system carried in Chinese non-English environment and to explore how UNNC help students to become good learners through the implicit and explicit instruction of learning strategy in classroom in the hope that students can reach the English requirement to take a full degree in one year with the lack of English environment. It attempts to find answers to the questions: l)What are the English learning strategies used by UNNC students at the beginning of their study? 2)What are the English learning strategies used by UNNC students at the end of Block 2? 3)Is there any significant difference between students' choice of learning strategies before and after studying in British teaching system? 4) If yes, what strategies are adjusted? 5)What factors cause the adjustment of learning strategies? The teaching philosophy of UNNC is learner-centered. Based on needs analysis of students, UNNC inserted the learning strategy training in the textbook, and embedded the learning strategy training in the classroom instruction. The students were taught how to fish but not given the fish. In order to collect the objective data, The SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) was distributed twice, during the first week when students entered UNNC and at the end of Block 2. A total of five students were interviewed twice in the present research. The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS, Version 11.0) was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Descriptive statistics as means, standard deviations were computed. And T-test was performed to find out the mean differences of samples. The quantitative and qualitative study reveal several striking findings about strategy use of UNNC student. 1)A11 of the strategies use level after two blocks increased dramatically except memory strategy. 2)The rank order of the six categories have changed. The affective strategy category which ranks the fifth at the beginning is reported being used more frequently than any other strategies and ranks the highest one at the end...
