The college English teaching is divided into two stages: the foundation stage (1st and 2nd year) and the advanced stage (3rd and 4th year). College English at the foundation stage is for all college students of the non-English major. However, for students majoring in Navigation and Marine Engineering in DMU, they have to further their English studies in specialty for their future occupation and education. There is a great gap between College English (CEB-4) and English for Navigation and Marine Engineering. This paper aims at investigating the possibility of compiling a series of reading textbooks with Academic Purposes which narrow the gap between College English (CEB-4) textbooks and the future textbooks for Academic Purposes which the students will touch in their third and fourth years English studies, whereas in the meantime coincide in the main aspects, such as vocabulary and structures required by the College English Teaching Syllabus (foundation stage), and consequently help to pass CET-4. The paper makes analyses to check to what extent the intended textbooks satisfy the requirements of the Syllabus in the main aspects such as vocabulary and structures, etc. The readabilities and the syntactic complexity, etc. of the selected articles are also analyzed to check if they are suitable for the students at the foundation stage of College English.
