Honglou Meng and its versions are perfect texts for Chinese-English literary translation study. As the most marvelous achievement of Honglou Meng is its vivid character utterances, my dissertation will focus on this respect, comparing the translations between two versions from the view of comparative aesthetics, hoping to obtain some useful experiences which will contribute to Chinese-English literature translation. In the Preface of the dissertation, a brief historical retrospect of development of aesthetics (of both east and west) and Chinese classical novels is made with the purpose to demonstrate the dissertation's theory resources. Chapter 1 introduces the task and outline of the dissertation. Chapter 2, 3 and 4 focus on three aesthetic features of character utterances of Honglou Meng, namely "utterance of colloquialism", "utterance of personalities" and "utterance of artistry", comparing and commenting on two versions from the view of aesthetics. Besides, many related translation problems are explored in the three chapters such as "alikeness in spirit & alikeness in form", "equivalence", "foreignizing method & "domesticating method", "untranslatablity", "creativity" and so on and so forth. The conclusion is drawn in the last chapter.
